В ответ на: Re: Saab вызывает 300 тысяч автомобилей для ремонта, отправленное Victor Solovsky 30 Сентября 2005 г. в 15:27

Recall is global, for a total of 287 987 cars, of which 68 034 in
Sweden with four cylinder engine and 67 with six cylinder engine. (Гетеборгский ежедневник).

"Saab forced to recall almost 300 000 cars

Saab is forced to recall almost 300 000 cars for a minimum cost of
600 million swedish crowns (€60 million). Overheating of the ignition
system is blamed.

Since spring, the US NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)
has been researching a number of incidents involving Saabs with overheating
ignition systems. It is the famous ignition cassette that overheats.

The ignition cassette was introduced by Saab already in mid-80s and
was seen to overcome other solutions as the spark plugs were in the
cassette and cables or other parts effected by dampness or escaping
sparks were eliminated. The ignition cassette has since evolved into
a number of different versions.

But in years 2000, 2001 and 2002 the construction was too sensitive.
The number of cases with overheating has been unacceptably high. NHTSA
in USA got reports of cars stopping while driven, overheating and
also catching fire.

This summer NHTSA has been conducting a research which results are
now clear. General Motors (Saab's owner) has been advised to recall
cars for inspection and to take action with the ignition cassettes.

The decision of the US safety administration has made Saab to start
preparing actions. "We will recall all cars with a gasoline engine
of years 2000 to 2002, that is 9-3 (old 9-3) and 9-5" says Örjan
Åslund, head of press for GM Sweden.

Recall is global, for a total of 287 987 cars, of which 68 034 in
Sweden with four cylinder engine and 67 with six cylinder engine.

Örjan Åslund reassures everyone concerned. "There has been a number
of incident in the USA, but luckily without injuries. Our understanding
is that there never has developed, as far as we know, any fires. Instead,
there has been smoke due to overheating." The NHTSA report does
mention also smoke/fire.

The recall can not be started immediately. "First, we must make sure that
the manufacturer produces enough replacement cassettes. We don't
have a date yet, but we proceed with a letter to be sent to all
owners effected. After this we will start the exchange of cassettes
later next spring."

Despite the systematic exchange of ignition cassette will take place
during 2006, can everyone continue to drive. "If someone gets
problems before this we will exchange their cassette directly" says
Örjan Åslund.

In the US reports it has been also noted that the catalysator can
be destroyd in certain cases. "We do not have any figures of how
often the catalysator has been damaged" says Örjan Åslund. "But
this is topical only if there already has been a problem with the
ignition. In these cases also the catalysator will be inspected and
if found damaged, will be exchanged without cost to the customer."

Car manufacturers have a habit of never giving any estimates of how
expensive the recall will be. Saab is no exception in this case. But
to exchange the ignition cassette in a shop costs to an average
customer 3500-4000 swedish crowns (€350-400). Even if Saab makes
a good deal with the shops, it is not unfair to calculate the cost
to be 2000 swedish crowns (€200) per car, maybe more if we calculate
how much it costs to track down all owners and sending them a letter
and build the ignition cassettes.

The total cost of this recall estimated as 600 million swedish crowns
(€60 million) is propably the low estimate rather than an overestimate.
The question is if Saab can distribute the cost.

The ignition cassettes are developed and provided by SEM AB, a subsidiary
of Opcon in Åmål. Saab's ignition cassettes are SEM's biggest product.
In cases like this it is not rare that the supplier carries a part
of the cost. This depends among other things if there has been a
problem with the specifications of the order or if the delivery
has been sub bar in quality."
